Pruning

Why prune shrubs?

Pruning not only keeps them looking good and at their proper size and shape to fit into the landscape, it removes diseased and dead branches. Prune foundation plantings to keep a open space between bushes and the house. This improves air circulation and eliminates a pathway for insects to enter your home. Maintaining shrubs short and trimmed deters burglars since they can not be used to hide behind.

When is pruning done?

The best time to prune varies depending on the type of shrub, but generally when the plant is dormant during winter or early spring before it begins to bud. However, for some spring blooming plants, it is best to wait until after it finished blooming to avoid interfering with that season’s flowers. Likewise, summer blooming plants can be pruned immediately after their flowering for the season has finished. Pruning should be avoided during late summer or  fall because it stimulates growth and the plant may be damaged if done too close to the first hard frost of winter.
