Aeration & Over Seeding

What is lawn aeration?

Lawn aeration involves running a machine with hollow metal spikes over the lawn to remove small plugs or cores of soil. The size of the soil plugs that are pulled out are typically one-half to three-quarters inches in diameter and anywhere from one to six inches deep depending on the machine used. The holes in the lawn that are created can be two to six inches apart.

Why do it?

Creating the small holes allows for “aeration” of the soil, so that there is more oxygen, water, and nutrients available to grass roots. Aeration is useful if your lawn is growing in heavy clay soil or the soil has become compacted and dense due to heavy traffic or poor drainage.

Why combine aeration with seeding?

Combining aeration with seeding provides the best chance for new root growth and a thicker lawn.
